Dermal Filler Dissolving
If you’re dissatisfied with the results of dermal filler treatments, fortunately, this can be easily amended by injections to dissolve the filler.
Reasons for needing or wanting filler dissolution may include the following:
- Overfilled
- The filler has moved or spread to other areas.
- Lumps and unevenness of dermal filler result
- Asymmetrical result
- Allergic reaction: swelling
- Late reaction: commonly seen in tear-through areas, swelling lump at the filler areas can appear even a few months after the filler has been injected.
- Infection
- Infection nearby the areas of dermal filler can cause an immune reaction that causes swelling and tender hard lump at the areas that have dermal filler.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be delicately dissolved with a naturally-occurring enzyme in our skin, referred to as Hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase enzyme can be injected to dissolve the problematic filler quickly.
This time-saving remedy is injected at higher concentrations and administers quick results when removing unwanted filler. The powdery formula is combined with saline solution and then directly injected into the area where the product has been placed; it will swiftly break down, leaving no trace of filler within mere minutes! While you may not witness any visible changes right away due to initial swelling, typically, after 24 hours, all signs will be gone – an amazing feat made possible by this magical enzyme known as Hyaluronidase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to Prepare for the Treatment?
We recommend that you avoid taking blood thinning tablets such as aspirin or ibuprofen (unless prescribed by your doctor) for 3 days prior to treatment. We also advise avoiding alcohol intake for 24 hours prior to treatment. It is also important that you are available for follow-up after treatment, so we recommend not to book injectable treatment if you are traveling in the next two weeks.
How Many Sessions Do I Need?
Our aim is to inject the minimum necessary dose of the enzyme to dissolve the unwanted filler but not to dissolve natural hyaluronic acid in the skin. For this reason, we only inject small quantities of enzyme per treatment. This means that more than one treatment may be required in order to fully remove the unwanted filler.
What Will Happen on the Day of the Treatment and any side effects afterwards?
On the day of treatment, Dr Miller will confirm the treatment plan, take you through the consent process and take some pre-treatment photographs. She will carry out an allergy patch test on your arm at least 20 minutes prior to the injection of the hyaluronidase enzyme. This is to check for any immediate allergic reactions that would mean it is not safe to inject the enzyme. In the meantime, the area of treatment will be cleaned, and numbing cream will be applied. If there are no signs of allergy (such as itching, redness or a wheal) after 20 minutes, we can safely proceed with treatment.
Once the area is numb and provided there is no sign of allergy, Dr Miller will start the treatment. The process of injection is usually no longer than 5 minutes. After treatment, aftercare cream will be applied, and she will discuss how best to look after the area that has been treated. Then a review appointment will be offered together with the aftercare instructions.
As with any injection, it is possible that you may experience some redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising. These may take 2-3 days to resolve, and bruises sometimes longer. We advise that you don’t plan treatments around important commitments and allow at least 2 weeks between treatment and an important social or work event.
